Pandemic And The Internet

Remember those days when all we wanted was paid leaves while we chill at home? And now that we have all of that, we wish nothing more than these days to be over.

In these difficult times, when the whole world has come to a standstill, the Internet has been our respite which has made lockdown a tolerable task.

The Internet has advanced to a whole new level trying to bring more and more ways to keep people entertained at home. This has given rise to various apps, trends, and habits so that the audience is engaged and has something to look forward to.

Some of them are:

1. The trend of Free Subscription:

This is considered as the best period to promote trial of products/services. With a lot of time to spare, and an urge to discover something new, various internet-based companies are giving out free subscriptions of their premium services for people to experience. Some examples are Shaadi.com, Pornhub Premium, Harvard Educational Online Courses.

2. The trend of Online Challenges:

This pandemic has become more of a productivity-enhancing period which is good as the people are trying to break the rut. Be it cooking challenges, 30-day exercise challenge or simply a reading challenge, there’s something for everyone. The young-gens are bringing such challenges over Social Media platforms like Instagram and Facebook and engaging their peers in it. While this increases one’s productivity, it has also become an issue of peer pressure where one might feel like an outcast if he/she is not involved in anything like this.

3. The trend of Social Networking Apps:

Social Networking apps have always been in the scenario but with the Coronavirus pandemic, there has been a boom in this. Any app which constantly engages multiple friends together has gained momentum in this period.

Apps like Houseparty, Zoom and even multiplayer gaming apps like Psych, Ludo, PubG have an increased active user base as the people try to stay connected and entertained.

While all of this sounds exciting in the lockdown times, the major question which arises is: What will be the future once the pandemic is over? Will it have the same buzz? Are the  desperate efforts made by the Internet-based companies sustainable or are just a part of the moment-marketing?
